The weather has started to predictably improve here in the Midwest and there are even daffodils popping up, so of course I'm in the mood for some spring color. While I do love a nice pastel rainbow, I also like ones that are slightly "off" with a lime or acidic green instead of mint, or a neon yellow pop. Something modern and adult in vibe. If you're in the same mood as me, you might enjoy these combos of yarn and pattern.
First, let me show off a limited edition colorway I have from Knitterly Things for Easter. Sweet & Sour is a stripe that not only includes pastel hues, but also gray and white for that mod feel. While one skein is plenty for a pair of socks, I will be putting mine with a mini for toes and heels. I like Be Hoppy, Natural, Poppin and Ice Ice Baby in Emma's minis to go with my skein. I haven't decided which yet, but I think a pop of pink might be the way to go. And if I'm still in the mood for more stripes after this one, I'll be going with something from Night Owl Fibers.
Cascade Yarns released Cotton Sox last year, and it's been quite popular in the shop. It's a nice option for, well, cotton socks, but also for sweaters. They released solids last year and we just got in the new Splash colors shown above. For a knit sweater, consider Seashore Stroll. For a crochet one, I like Farmer's Market Top. Either of these would be perfect for spring.
Laneras has some lovely springy hues that are accented by their opposing-ply-method where one ply of the yarn is spun in the opposite direction of the other before plying them all together. It gives a barberpole look to the yarn and makes it more durable too. Some colors that I'm into today are Bambolina, Embarcadero, Rivendell, and Purple Heart all shown on Secretos Sock. Maybe combine a couple colors to keep your shoulders warm this season in a Clockwork Shawl? We're always happy to help you find two you love together - just email me, Allison, at [email protected].
Hedgehog Fibres is a go-to if you like modern pastel flair. Their entire color collection seems to focus on these types of colorways, and their 2024 spring collection is no exception (see them all listed here). Beata, the owner and color genius, releases lots of great free patterns to go with their yarns. Some of my faves are Pelargonium, Le Pouf, Electric Sheep (uses DK), and Tweedy Shrug (we have all the colors of Tweedy DK for it too). All projects are shown below, courtesy of Hedgehog Fibres.
Emma's Yarn is always great for modern colors (and fun names that match). Here are some that I really like this season. We have a wide array of weights, minis and mohair here.
Bohemian Market (pairs well with Briar Rose)
Shown on Minis, Parasol is also available on other bases
Let's not forget about the Blossom Gradients from Wonderland Yarns! These beauties are dyed to give you a gradient piece and look stunning in shawls and scarves. One is great for a shawlette or lacey scarf, but get two if you want two matching socks or a larger project. It would look amazing in a Stormy Sky Shawl. Shown below in 50-Yarrow and 47-Rosemary.
Now, if you really want a pop of color, we have the new yarn from West Yorkshire Spinners, and it's a DK Sock. We have their normal DK, but it doesn't have nylon. Now they have released one that does and the dappled colors are pretty darn cool. It comes with a free DK weight sock pattern too, so just respond to your emailed receipt after your purchase to ask for the pdf.
Perhaps this give you a jumping off point for ideas for your spring projects? I have some socks on the needles, and two hats I should be finishing up. But I'll likely cast on something new soon just because. I'm definitely not monogamous in my knitting.
