You may have noticed that we have two new Opal Yarn Collections, Crazy Waters and Rainforest 19! These are super colorful and I've already snagged a ball of color 11315 for myself. The weather has finally turned here in Indiana, and I want a brand new, super brightly colored pair of socks! There's something about the sudden turn of weather than makes me want to cast on 3 pairs of socks immediately. You too?

If you really want to keep warm this winter, I recommend taking a look at the Fleece Artist Thrummed Mitten Kits we have. It's as simple as knitting a thick mitten but tearing off a bit of fleece and added it to a stitch every once in awhile (pattern included). Then you have a fleece lined mitten when you're done! We have a hard time keeping up with how fast these go in the fall and winter. We have more coming next week, as long as they all clear Customs in a timely manner. Want more thick knits? I mean, we're called Simply Socks, but over 18 years we've added weights up to super bulky.... and a lot of it! We have every color of Malabrigo Rasta and Caracol so you can knit up thick hats and scarves super fast. I knit up the squishiest scarf last Sunday (pattern details here) using two skeins of Caracol and it's just divine. One day of knitting and I'll be cozy all winter!

If you'd like to treat yourself to a skein of something you haven't tried before, I recommend looking at Qing Fibres of London, The Sheepy Shire made here in the US or one of the holiday colors of West Yorkshire Spinners that we import from the UK. What will you find? We have restocks and new colors of our exclusive Colossal Sock from Dream in Color. These are 150g skeins for $24. This is a fave for those who like a less slick, a bit more rustic feel in their sock yarn. It's on the heavier side of fingering weight, and is just as good for sweaters as it is socks. There are several dyers that we are letting go. Some, like Less Traveled Yarn and Kenyarn and Wooly Wonka, are leaving for good as they have shuttered their studios for other endeavors. Others like Skein Yarn and Fleece Artist and Fiberstory, they are just changing the fibers blends they are offering or how they put up their mini skeins, and we'll still stock their goods. We're just letting go of things they aren't making the same any more.

A Perfectly Fall Weekend

A few months ago, I had plans to attend Rhinebeck this past weekend for NY Sheep and Wool. But when it came closer I just didn't feel like traveling that far and dealing with crowds. It's been a busy fall and just felt like one more thing to add that I didn't need to. Instead, I had my own perfectly wonderful fall weekend with hiking, visiting friends and family, knitting, and decorating for Halloween.

Not only did we take a short road trip to spend time with family, we also got to see college friends and go hiking. If you're close to Bloomington, Indiana, I highly recommend a nice hour-long hike at Leonard Springs Nature Park. A beautiful hike accented by caves and little waterfalls and a perfectly gorgeous walk overall.

We decorated for Halloween, which also included trying to untangle the webs that our five-foot spiders live on. We did not succeed. Note to non knitters who pack up the web at the end of the season - take direction from the knitter in your life and store your string properly. LOL!

I also cast on and finished a new project that I'm calling my Sunday Scarf because it's easily finished on a Sunday. A simple scarf using two skeins of Malabrigo Caracol, a super bulky weight yarn that feels wonderful and knits up super quick. I chose two skeins of Caracol color 249-Talisman, cast on 19 stitches with a 24" US 15 needle and did the Cartridge Belt Rib the entire way. What's the Cartridge Belt Rib? It's just a two row repeat. Row 1: K3, *sl1 wyif, k3; rep from * to end. Row 2: K1, *sl1 wyif, k3; rep from * to last 2 sts, sl1 wyif, k1. And continue for as long as you want your scarf. I had about 20% of one skein left, and I'm planning on using that for a thick stripe on a coordinating hat.

Tuesday (tomorrow) marks our 4th week of Socktober goodies and we'll have a bunch of beautiful sale yarns. Dream in Color's Colossal Sock will be back, as will a special silk blend sock yarn from Austria. We'll also have new Opal Yarn collections, and three new collections from Laines du Nord. October Hat Sets & Sock Sets - a Preview

Tomorrow we release our October Hat Sets and Sock Sets! Here they are in all their glory.

I was inspired by recent new colors from Madelinetosh in these Hat Sets. You'll see lots of vivid hues and speckles. Things that give me something bright to look forward to wearing all winter. I hope you feel the same and find something for yourself or the person in your life with a vibrant heart! You can find them Tuesday morning in the Kits & Clubs section.

Then I just had to have a set that gives Halloween vibes, and so I paired the Bram Stoker color from Tosh with a super cool pom. I also think these would be great for a holiday hat! The Copy Cat CC Beanie is a fave here for worsted weight, and Wurm Hat for DK. I use the patterns interchangeably for both weights.

I also want to share that we will also have a new base from Malabrigo tomorrow. Caracol is a super bulky yarn (so the same weight as popular Rasta) bit it has an accent thread crisscrossed around the yarn. It lends a really cool and dynamic look to your finished hat, scarf, etc. Since the weather turned a bit, I'm totally into knitting a scarf with this stuff this weekend. Want a cozy crochet shawl to wrap around this fall? I love Abrupt. It uses Sweet Georgia's Tough Love Sock.

Next week we're celebrating Socktober with more of the Zebra sock sets, a collab with Irish dyer Life in the Long Grass and Florida studio Emma's Yarn. We'll also have our first round of our fall/winter Hat Sets we've been doing for a few years now. These feature a skein of DK or worsted weight yarn with one of our faux fur pom poms. We pair them so you don't have to wonder if your yarn and pom go together well - they do! We like them for patterns like this.

Single Skein Project Ideas

If you're anything like me, you have a lot of fingering weight, single skeins of yarn that you just could not resist. Skeins that were Halloween themed that you wanted to cast on in October of last year (but didn't), skeins that you purchased on vacation and you're looking for just the right pattern, or skeins that a friend surprised you with. Here are a few patterns I love, or that are hits here in the shop, that wonderfully highlight those single skeins of yarn. Lace Ribbon Scarf and One Row Lace Scarf are ones that are on display in the shop at all times. Not only are they easy, but they are free. And who doesn't love that. I knit the Lace Ribbon Scarf above in Casbah color Ivory.

Sockhead Cowl and Sockhead Hat are popular for the same reasons. They are quite simple, I've knit them several times myself, and are wonderful projects to keep going, carry along with you, and forget about for weeks because you won't lose track of where you are. Shown above is the hat in Dream in Color color Cabaret. Go with their cashmere blend for a total win!

Casapinka's One and Done, shown above, is a really great option for a highly variegated shawl using one skein. Also look at her Long Story Short and Painterly Cowl. Go bright with some of our Qing Fibres of London.

Joji Locatelli's Lone Skein Shawl is a definite winner. I love the details and tiny tassels. I like Lightweight Hipster for the same reason. I love the idea of using one of the many speckles in the Tosh Merino Light we have in stock.

Things that you might want to grab yarn for and create something for yourself or something that you might want to make for a holiday gift. Friday I shared some combos of Madelinetosh for Stephen West's Staggered Striping Shawl. Today, I have a few other ideas that I've been pondering. 

Over the past week, several of you have emailed about or ordered yarn (this solid and this stripe) for the Butterfly Cowl. I love that it uses just one skein of each (less, really, so you can make several), and I am particularly fond of using it as a way to cover my gray roots this winter. I'm pretty sure I mentioned last year that one of the reasons I love having a hand knit hat at the ready is to cover my hair when I haven't been to the salon next door in a timely manner. Well, this cowl would do nicely too, as shown below.

While you're getting Urth Yarn for the patterns above, you might also want to look at the Sock Kits. The "kits" are two matching 50g balls of sock yarn in a little box so you can knit matching striped socks. I knit a pair for Terry who has size 12-13 feet (shown below in color 57), and there was even plenty for his socks. so it's a great option for gift socks for large footed people too. I knit a basic pattern for mine, but if you wanted to add a bit of texture to your striped socks, try the Twizzler Sock pattern.

If you didn't join us last month when the KAL started, the Malabrigo KAL shawl is also a great knit to consider! it uses three skeins of their Mohair and two skeins of their Sock or Ultimate Sock. Our shop manager Heather finished hers super fast, and I'm a bit more than halfway done with mine.

If you're a Malabrigo fan, now's the time to grab a skein of Rasta (super bulky weight) for a quick hat. Yes, 18 years ago we sold just sock yarn but now that we have all weights, we sell a crazy amount of Rasta. It makes beautiful hats, cowls, mittens and more. And it's rare to see all the colors in place at one time. Then get a pom to top off your awesome hat!

Staggered Striping Shawl by Stephen West

The last Saturday we were open, our shop friend Brenda came in and showed off some of her finished projects. She also shared some things that she is considering next and one of them is the Staggered Striping Shawl by Stephen West. Since then, I've been considering options for my own shawl. As one does.

We got in a huge shipment (nearly a half ton!) from Madelinetosh this week and as I photograph it all for the website, I've been pairing colors that I like together for this shawl. As one does. So here are a few photos directly from my photo roll on my phone of things I'm considering. I'm sharing these with you before I even snag them for myself because a) I know I can order more for myself next week b) I'm oh-so-selfless (ha! and eyeroll) c) I know that I likely have most of the same colors on Tosh Sock or Twist Light and can sub those for the Tosh Merino Light skeins shown below.

So here are the ones I'm considering for the Staggered Striping Shawl. You need two skeins of each color. So four skeins total.

Leaf Fall & Fatal Attraction

The number of skeins I have pictured has nothing to do with the quantity you need. They are just skeins I pulled together to snap a shot on my phone. It's also worth noting that if I choose the above combo, I would DEFINITELY (yes, worth shouting) untwist the skein of Fatal Attraction (the red) and put it in a sink full of cold water to soak and make sure that all the dye is rinsed out. I would not cut the ties b/c I don't want the skein to tangle. Then I would rinse it until the water was completely clear, then I'd remove the yarn from the sink and roll it up in a bath towel and step on the towel to get the water out of the skein. Then I would hang it to dry. Then wind it into a cake once dry. Look, I'd like to think that every skein of yarn we get is perfect, but experience tells me it's not, and I'd hate to see the red in the above Fatal Attraction color even slightly bleed into the Leaf Fall and blur the stark lines in the stripes of the shawl. So please, don't tempt fate when combining colors like this. Just take the extra time to rinse solid or bold hues. Pretty please.

Before I share all the fall goods we'll have for  Socktober and Halloween, I just want to thank you so SO much for your amazing support of our Socktober sock yarn club. It was, by far, the biggest and best response we've ever gotten to our clubs in all our 18 years. We had more clubs available than ever before, and space was sold out in in a weekend's time. To me, that shows me that you appreciate the clubs we've done so far if you keep on enrolling. I can't wait to share with you the beautiful marled yarns in our new SSYC Quirky Sock Yarn collection starting in your mid-November shipment. Emma's Yarn has pulled out all the stops for us with some spankin' new options. We asked them to dye up some DK weight sock sets in autumn inspired colors, and hat sets that featuring a mini skein for a brim or a nice stripe in a hat PLUS a matching pom. And yes, each of these DK weight sets is superwash merino AND nylon- and that's rare to find a hand dyed DK merino with nylon in it. And yes, we'll be offering this same DK weight yarn in a whole bunch of colors in the shop soon. AND DK weight minis. Seriously!

Emma's Yarn also sent us their two Halloween 10-mini skein sets, Treat Street and Boo Thang. We also have all their other new mini skein sets like Isn't She Grand (a sunset Grand Canyon theme) and Starry Night. Truly beautiful. Maybe try a couple for a Habitation Throw, pair with a solid for a Collins Tee  or a Pixel Pop. Or just make the best pair of scrappy socks ever.

We have one last batch from Kenyarn in the Cauldron color. Jake Kenyan closed up his popular studio earlier this year but we're fortunate to have this exclusive color for the last time.

I'll just put a couple below. LMFA also provides knit up pictures, so you can see how each might look in a project, which is quite nice when the colors are quite variegated.

Want tools? We had our artisan make two different stitch marker sets, one fall themed with maple leaves, a heddgehog, a fox and an owl. Then we have a Halloween set with a witch, black cat, pumpkin and candy corn.

Katrinkles has sent us their spooky sweater, fall feels, and cats sets too!

Love Madelinetosh? We do too and have their Halloween hues back again this year on many base yarns!

It's worth noting that we often ship out within one day of your order, but during busy times like this, we need more time. We are a small crew, so please give us 2-3 days to see that shipment/tracking e-mail. Please also note that we often get emails or notes about combining orders or adding to them. During our busy times, this isn't really possible to keep track of, so if you place more than one order, but ask to combine them, it's likely that we can't at this time and they will ship separately as ordered. Also, if you realize that you'd like to add a thing or two to your first order, please place a second order online, rather than ask via email about adding, because by the time we check emails it could be that the item/s you wanted to add are sold out. We are happy to help you save money on shipping by combining orders when we can, but it's not possible when we are so (wonderfully) overwhelmed with shopping/shipping during this time.
