Kate Atherley has a wonderful book “Custom Socks Knit to Fot Your Feet” that includes knee socks. Her charts make it easy for you to measure your foot and leg and make a sock that fits you. I have used this book for several years to knit socks for many people.

If you want heavier socks, a great pattern is Wisconsin Winter Socks published years ago by Cottage Creations. I'm not sure if it's available any more. I knit them to see me through cold winters. The pattern includes calf shaping, and the socks are knee highs.

Thank you all for the super helpful responses! I'll check them out for sure. It's nice to have a supportive community to reach out to for answers.

Side note, I'm not from Des Moines, as is stated in the original post.

I'm from Lacey, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest.
