What you said. Take a few inches of yarn, loop it through, & weave the ends in. I would probably fold the yarn in half, put it through that stitch, pull the ends through that loop, thus securing that stitch in that few inches of yarn. Then I’d weave in the ends very securely.

Use duplicate stitch to insert what should have been there. It works.

What about laddering it up to the point where it would have been integrated into a short row, and then taking a bit of yarn and do a little duplicate stitch and weave it in in the wrong side?

Huh. I just realized that I interpreted the photo wrong, it's not a dropped stitch. Yeah, just wash that sucker and that loop will probably disappear completely unless you're looking for it.

Absolutely fudge it with a scrap piece. If it turns out at all visible in the end, it's the result of being a handknit item.
