Who knew I would be waxing poetic about BROWN. I mean, green, for sure. But brown? I don't think I've ever knit anything in brown before. But here I am, sitting in a shop full of color this morning, thinking about what I want to knit with Life in the Long Grass' most recent brown, Tiller. This is a beautiful hue. It's not warm, not cool, just perfect. And it has slight smudges of gold and mahogany and green. It's just a luscious color.
Shown below on Sock, also available on Singles and DK Twist.
And they also just released Bronze, which is more solid and amazing lovely too. Shown below on Silk Merino. Have you tried this yarn yet? It's 50% silk, 50% merino and for an imported yarn (Ireland) it's priced really well at $34 for a luxury blend.
And of course these two colors make me think about what other browns I'd like to point out, in case you're like me and you rarely look for browns. Log Cabin from Swift Yarn. Shown below on Tweed Sock (with a bit of cashmere), and also available on Bliss Sock (cashmere), Tender Sock (merino/nylon) and Simple Singles.
If you haven't noticed Malabrigo's color 048-Glitter before, it's also totally knit worthy. Shown below on the sport weight base of Arroyo, it's great for winter accessories. I also have it in worsted weight Rios and Mechita singles. Malabrigo is dyed in a way that each skein is a bit different even within the same lot/bag, but we'll always choose the skeins that are the most similar if you need more than one. And we contact you if what is have causes us a bit of pause. If we would expect a shop to contact us about matching, we would contact you via e-mail before shipping.
Stained Brass from Walk Collection is definitely a nuanced brown. It really does seem like stained brass in person too. A nicely toasty hue. Shown below on Tough Sock, it's also available on DK and Cozy Merino singles.
I hope this selection has given you a bit of inspiration if brown isn't a color that you've enjoyed before. I have several safe-color people in my life that would appreciate a hand knit pair of socks, hat or scarf, and this gives me a jumping off point for colors that would be simple enough for them, and an interesting knit for me. Do you have a color that you haven't knit before but want ideas? Tell me in the comments which color you'd like to me tackle next!
I used to wear brown a lot but now that the auburn highlights in my hair are turning silver and the deep brown-black is the predominant color that you see, I don't wear browns or tans very well anymore. But I love Tiller and Bronze and would love to see what you knit with them. Thanks! I bet they'd make gorgeous socks and ??? I don't know what else. Log cabin is lovely, too!

I love brown, especially warm-toned browns— they remind me of a cozy old corduroy jacket for some reason. Tiller and the Malabrigo brown are both beautiful.
Orange might be a neat color to spotlight next, especially in October! I’ve used red-orange before but otherwise it’s not a color I see a lot of people knitting with.
