Yarny advent calendars are all the rage. Opal's been doing it for years (I'll let you know if they do one this year, they skipped last year), small dyers have followed suit and each is different and a cool way to count down to Christmas. We've paired with none other than Hedgehog Fibres to do what they do, dyeing amazing potluck hues that you can only get through us. If you love the nature of a surprise, whether you open all your mini skein packages at once, or actually do save them as a way to celebrate the holidays, we have a super advent in store for you! Join us in SSYC's 12 Days of Sock Yarn, a Mini Potluck Skein Advent!
What is this exactly? Well, you get your own unique set of 12 potluck mini skeins of Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn, hand wrapped and numbered. You order now, and we ship it to you when ready in mid-September. Potluck colors are ones that Hedgehog doesn't dye again- they are unnamed color experiments of true whimsy and creativity. You can choose to open eveyrthing up when you receive your set, or you can choose to dole each day out during our annual 12 Days of Sock Yarn celebration Dec 13-24. If you're new to that event, it's our own yarny celebration here where you can win really awesome yarns and learn more about our crafy community. Here's an example of the 7th Day last year, and you can scroll back and forward if you want to see other days.
One of the cool things about our yarn advent is that you can order more than one if you want, and it won't be the same. You can also share it early on social media if you want and you won't spoil it for anyone who is waiting til December to open hers because each one is slightly different. Hedgehog dyed us up hundreds of colors of mini skeins for this, and so each set we send out will be a potluck adventure! Heck, someone already e-mailed me that she is ordering two- one to open immediately in September and one to actually open in December. And I also love the idea of ordering two if you want a to do the 24 days leading up to Christmas. But at least this way, with just 12 days, the cost is much lower than most of the advents out there. You can still take part without busting your entire holiday budget.
The pictures shown here are an example of some of the potluck colors, and they are downright amazing in person.
Another awesome thing? This is hand made fiber art at its finest. Each mini skein has been hand dyed and skeined, and then it's wrapped by us and tagged with hand made/numbered tags (Days 1-12) made by me and my staff and even my kids. Yes, it's a real fiber family event here, from Ireland to Indiana to you!
Yes, these types of sets take a lot of time and tons of extra effort. But I LOVE this type of thing. I love surprises, I love yarn, and love showing people that they matter. If those things speak to you, I think you'll love our advent too. I have a set amount, and it's likely I'll have some available now and then more later in the season when this sells out. I don't recommend hesitating if you do want to secure one (prepaying now and automatically shipped in full to you in mid-September), but if they sell out, just know I'll do my best to create more before December. Also know that the cost could increase, as imported goods are subject to the change in the USD. And this is a really great deal at $110 for such a set.
Have questions after reading the product listing? Please do ask them in the comments below because it's likely that other people have the same question. Want pattern ideas? Here are a few that I and others suggested here on the blog last month: Quince, ADVENTurous Wrap, Inara, ADVENTurer, Fluorite Socks, Torquata, Fondant Socks, Lead the Way. Plus you know other designers are going to make more mini-type patterns for the upcoming advent season, so I'm betting there will be lots more cool options. And some do ask for a full sized contrasting skein, and since you won't know what your set (these sets aren't meant to fade or coordinate in a certain way) will look like, you'll need to wait and order that full sized skein should you choose that type of project.
A great idea...what’s the yardage of each mini skein?
