In my house, the tried-and-true Toll House cookie recipe is The Thing. I live in a household of males who love a simple treat, so nothing too complicated for them. In fact, I made them this week. The only thing I change is instead of putting in a whole bag of morsels, I do equal amounts of morsels PLUS MnM's. So a cup of each morsels and candy. And NO nuts.
Now, as far as for myself, I'm a Snickerdoodle kinda gal.
Now go browse online for some of the awesome things we have in our big ol' shop if you win the Gift Certificate. I recommend sending the Gift Certificate link to anyone that gives you mediocre gifts so they know what you REALLY want this Christmas. Perhaps you want to stock up on the Mineville Wool Project yarn that's 45% off in the Sale Section. Or perhaps you haven't yet tried Swift Yarn or this great deal from Blue Moon Fiber Arts. Make that list and check it twice!
Leave me one comment below before 8am tomorrow and you'll be entered to win in today's contest. Please be as specific as you like, as I know many of us find inspiration for our knitting and our lives in what you share. Want to know more about the 12 Days of Sock Yarn? See here.
My Grandma made her "Vinegar Cookies" every Christmas. There were like a sugar cookie. She make them incredibly thin and always sprinkled colored sugar on top of them. I have tried to make them, but as we all know, our Grandmas always had a special mojo when it came to baking!

One tradition I have maintained for 45 years or so are Lifesaver Christmas books. I used to buy them for my children when they were small and upward, now I buy for the grandchildren. My grown up kids laugh but I know if I forgot them they would let me know. They make a great stocking stuffer! Oh, when my kids were small they were about a dollar or so, now between $3 and $4 depending where you buy and 1/2 the amount of rolls of lifesavers they used to have.

I live in a house full of testosterone (hubby & 3 sons) so any sort of cookie is gone instantly. Their favorites are no bake or chocolate chip cookies. My favorites are oatmeal raisin or ginger cookies.

I’m English but living in America and I haven’t really embraced the cookie making tradition. Maybe it’s time I should.so I’m looking forward to trying some new recipes.

Oh it's 100% tollhouse recipe in my house as well. With a couple of modifications depending on how I feel when I'm making them (cinnamon! Nutmeg! cayenne!)

We always make cut-out sugar cookies, but I've used different recipes over the years - it's the frosting and sprinkles that make them special!
This year I'm also going to try my hand at shortbread, using this recipe: https://www.nordicware.com/classic-shortbread

Our go-to cookie recipe is https://www.google.com/amp/s/allrecipes.com/recipe/15161/cowboy-cookie-mix-in-a-jar/amp/ with the following tweaks: we use Hershey's Special Dark morsels AND Heath toffee bits (1/2 pkg) as well as 1/2 pkg of shredded coconut. You might need less flour than the amount called for so add the coconut & oatmeal in first and start with 1cup of flour. "Mike's Cowboy Cookies" has been the most requested recipe with family, friends and coworkers at our house, even if people swear they don't like nuts, coconut or cookies . Enjoy!

I agree with you - you can’t go wrong with the Toll House Cookie recipe!! It’s my college age son’s favorite, so I make them whenever he’s coming home or when I go visit him. I have a non-baking friend and I once asked her if she made Toll House Cookies for her kids and she had no idea what I was talking about - those poor kids!

My family always loves Chocolate Chip Balls:
¾ cup butter, ½ cup sugar, 2 tsp vanilla, 1 egg, 2 cups sifted flour,
½ tsp salt, 1 cup nuts (optional), 1 6 oz pkg mini chocolate chips
Cream sugar & butter, mix vanilla & egg and add. Mix flour, salt & chips and add.
Shape into small balls and bake at 350°, 15-20 minutes. Cool & roll in powdered sugar.
Makes 3 dozen

I actually have two. One it Toll House. It must be everyone's favorite. I bake these for birthdays, Christmas, when someone needs a smile, etc. The other is one from my grandmother, oatmeal chocolate chip. They are my favorite. However they don't ever seem to be as good as grandma made. They had a dairy farm. I am sure she used the freshest of everything.

My favorite Christmas cookie has to be cut out sugar cookies. Iced and decorated,of course.
Posted by: Jill | December 06, 2017 at 08:28 AM
I love my grandpa's recipe for rolled butter cookies this time of year. They're hard, crunchy, and exactly the thing to dip in a glass of milk. It's so versatile - you can make cut-out sweaters to decorate like ugly sweater cookies, which we just did at a party a couple days ago. Or you can make pinwheels with cranberry sauce, or add in bits of candied orange and dip the baked cookies in chocolate. So many delicious variations on a delicious base!
Here's the basic dough recipe:
1/2 c. butter
1 egg
Large splash of vanilla (that's a scientific measurement)
1 c. sugar
1/4 t. salt
2 c. flour.
It helps to make this in a stand mixer if you have one available, because at first it's hard to work all that flour into the butter/sugar/egg mixture. But it all comes together perfectly in the end. And you definitely don't need a stand mixer - my grandpa always did it by hand, you just need to put some elbow grease into it :-).

Our favorite is the tried and true Seven Layer Cookie Bar. It's the only one I make every year. A local bakeshop has a cookie baking class at the holidays, and it is turning into a tradition for my daughter and I to attend and bake our cookies together.

In Wisconsin, the Electric company handed out Cookie books at Christmas time, I have a book from the early 60's that has a peanut butter cookie recipe that never fails. That is this gal's go to

Well, this is a difficult question to answer. Our family favorite all year round is the Chocolate Chip cookie recipe from an old Better Homes and Garden cook book. I also love the Peanut butter blossom cookie - yum!
Posted by: Lynn | December 06, 2017 at 08:42 AM
I always love the peanut butter blossom cookies, but in our house my mom always used chocolate stars rather than Hershey kisses. They've been proving harder to find over the years, but they're worth it for that bit of holiday nostalgia!

By far my favorite cookie from when my mom and grandma were alive has to be the nut horn cookie (with cream cheese dough). I don't have my recipes with me, but here is one https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/horn-walnut-cookies

Our favorite cookie recipe is the one made with butterscotch chips from the recipe on the back of the bag. My kids call them “Latka” cookies taken from the show Taxi from years ago because you can’t stop eating them just like they were doing with the brownies on Taxi. 😋
Posted by: Daryl | December 06, 2017 at 08:47 AM
My kids like frosted cutout cookies, and every year I bake a bunch and let them go bananas with sprinkles, colored sugars and frosting that I dye with food coloring. Personally, I prefer molasses cookies!

Home made windmill cookies that are a Dutch Christmas cookie full of spices and almonds and nice and crispy! I make them for my Father every year ( who is Dutch). They don’t last long around our house.

The favorite cookies in our family are the Italian Fig cookies (Cucidati). The filling is made earlier and mellowed for a few weeks. This weekend my daughter and I will roll, fill and bake them. Gingerbread, pizzelles, cutouts and Jam Thumbprints are all favorites.
Posted by: JackieLemon | December 06, 2017 at 08:51 AM
Our favorite is Snickerdoodles. At Christmas time I use colored sugars!
Posted by: Pat | December 06, 2017 at 08:54 AM
Lately I've been making plain sugar cookies - just your standard recipe, but adding crushed candy cane chunks to the dough. I cool the dough then make little thumbprint cookies to bring to work and they're been a big hit for the last few years :)
Posted by: Diana | December 06, 2017 at 08:54 AM
Our family favorite for anytime is Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies. When I was a teenager we were introduced to Pizelles and we added them to our holiday baking. As an adult I added Fruitcake Cookies to the mix - they get made in years that I don't make fruitcakes.

Toll House chocolate chip cookies are my go-to! Without nuts and a “secret” ingredient (use both Crisco and butter for the fat). My grandmother passed away when I was 9, and most of my memories of her involve baking chocolate chip cookies. The week before she passed we made enough cookies to cover every surface of the house! The smell from the oven always reminds me of her.

Red Velvet Gooey Cookies! I started making them 4 years ago. This year I was thinking of making something different on cookie baking day, but everyone insisted I make the red velvet cookies again.

My favorite cookies are rolled cookies with a vanilla glaze. I have my grandmother's recipe. She lived in Wisconsin and would send us cookies every year for Christmas. My husband thinks chocolate chip are Christmas cookies, but since I make them all year round, I tell him they don't count! :)

My great-great-great Grandmother's secret shortbread recipe! I only make it at Christmas but occasionally the youngest member of the family begs for it during the year.

I'm the only person I know who doesn't like chocolate very much. I make the dough from the Toll House Chocolate Chip recipe, but add white chocolate chips instead. SO GOOD! Thanks for the yarn opportunity!

Mexican hot chocolate cookies! A recipe I found online and tweaked a bit to make it zesty.

My favorite cookie recipe is one that everyone loves. Super easy and quick, leaving more time to knit.
1 box of Devil's Food cake mix
1/2 c cooking oil
2 eggs
Mix well. Add topping of your choice (m&m's, nuts, sprinkles, etc). Bake 8-10 mins at 350* on ungreased sheet.
:)

We always make snowball cookies. I think they have a multitude of names in different cultures. They're basically a shortbread, rolled up into a ball, baked, then rolled in powdered sugar. Any weight I gain during the Christmas season is from those cookies.

On my dad's side of the family, it's Candy Cane cookies. On my mom's side, it's Holly Wreaths, which aren't really cookies. You melt marshmallows and butter, add green food coloring, and stir in a bunch of corn flakes. Then you form it into wreath shapes on wax paper and add red hots for the holly berries. Kind of like a festive rice Krispy treat.

My all time favorite Christmas cookie is called Date Pinwheel. They were very labor intensive so my mom only made them once a year. My mom passed away 23 years ago and I haven't had that cookie since. I would love to taste a date pinweel again. It would definitely bring back memories of my mom.

This one, hands-down, is the absolute best ginger cookie recipe ever: King Arthur Chocolate Gingerbread recipe https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/chocolate-gingerbread-cookies-recipe. It's even better if you use white chocolate chips and chopped crystallized ginger instead of regular chocolate chips! (And there are no eggs, so you can make it vegetarian or vegan by switching out the butter for margarine).

Ooh... Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies!
I do very little baking, as each of us has such different food allergies. I also rarely eat sweets anymore. But when I see these, or think "if I could have any treat...", it's the old-fashioned Magic Cookie Bars. Here is a link to the recipe:

I love, love, love, a good gingerbread cookie. But good, flavorful gingerbread cookies are hard to find. So, I make my own - just for me and only at Christmas time.
I have a recipe that is quite different as it is put together like a scone and is kneaded to get all of the ingredients to come together. It's labor intensive, but it's very flavorful and a perfect end to a day. I also only use red hots for eyes and buttons - no frosting for me.
Thank you for the recipes in the posts - the recipe I use is too involved to include. But, I always appreciate good cookie recipes.

We had a local bakery called Rosalyn's that closed. They put out a cookbook of their recipes scaled down (somewhat unsuccessfully) for normal kitchens. We make the pecan tea cookies. Gingerbread cookies! Recipe from the Betty Crocker cookbook. My sister and I made these with mom beginning in the 70's probably, and I made them with my own kids. They're grown now, and I still make them, and the kids help when they're home :)

Toll house chocolate chip pan cookies. Everyone else in the family may say something different, but I know these are the favorite because when I make them they are gone in less then 48 hours. Faster than any other cookie. I serve them warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yum!
Posted by: Jennifer | December 06, 2017 at 09:19 AM
My favorite Christmas cookies are the buttery Spritz cookies that you have to squeeze out of a cookie press. It's such a pain, but they're so good. I love a tiny cookie so you can keep popping them in your mouth instead of choosing one cookie and then feeling guilty for wanting one of each of the big ones. But for non-Christmas cookies I love Pinch of Yum's perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe. I take one tbsp of white sugar out and add a tbsp of honey and that makes them stay chewy a few more days instead of getting hard and crispy. If you are a cookie dough connoisseur, these are amazing to lick the spoon. Sometimes I like the dough better than the cookies, but this recipe's finished cookies taste just like cookie dough.

I love cookie recipes from old Martha Stewart magazines. My Mom has a collection that she has kept over the years, and I always spend time every holiday season looking through them to try a "new" recipe. My favorite are her classic Ginger Bread cookies. They're not too hard...I've copied the recipe below from her holiday magazine in 2007.
These cookies have a dark color and a pronounced molasses flavor. For the how-to on creating different shapes, read Shaped Gingerbread Cookies. Source: Martha Stewart Living, December 2007
Makes about 2 dozen town houses, 4 dozen deer or trees, or 6 dozen men
YIELD
INGREDIENTS
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
4 teaspoons ground ginger
4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
2 sticks (16 tablespoons) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup packed dark-brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups unsulfured molasses
Royal Icing for Gingerbread Cookies
DIRECTIONS
1. Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and spices in a medium bowl.
2. Beat butter and sugar with a mixer on medium-high speed until fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in molasses. Reduce speed to low. Gradually add flour mixture, and beat until just combined. Divide dough into 3 portions, and wrap each in plastic. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a generously floured piece of parchment, roll dough to a scant 1/4 inch thick. Brush off excess flour. Slide dough and parchment onto baking sheets, and freeze for 15 minutes.
4. Cut out desired shapes. Transfer to parchment-lined baking sheets, and freeze for 15 minutes.
5. Bake cookies for 6 minutes. Remove sheets from oven, and tap them firmly on counter to flatten cookies. Return to oven, rotating sheets, and bake until crisp but not darkened, 6 to 8 minutes more. Let cool on sheets on wire racks.
6. Spoon icing into a pastry bag fitted with a very small plain round tip (such as Ateco #0 or #1). Pipe designs on cookies. Let cookies stand at room temperature until set, at least 2 hours (preferably overnight).

Hamantaschen - a filled cookie. I, personally like poppy seed or prune filling, but more popular fillings are cherry, apricot, and nut. Once, when we ran out of fillings, we used a few chocolate chips in each.

My Mom, who’s in heaven now, used to make the most wonderful Molasses cookies. They’re kind of like a ginger snap but soft , perfectly round, crackled on top and melt in your mouth delicious. The cookie recipe uses Grandma’s molasses — comes in jar with yellow label You can still buy at the grocery store. I think she originally got the recipe off the jar I have her handwritten recipe — made them once or twice— my kids didn’t like them so I stopped making them. I think since they’re grown & gone I may just make some again. Hope they come out like Mom’s.

My husband loves a cookie called a “cowboy” cookie...it’s a granola cookie that bakes up a little crunchy but not too. I found the recipe on line and printed it. Now I keep it taped on the inside of my cabinet door at eye level so it’s always at hand. Now when I see an interesting flavor of granola I make it into a cookie.

About a year ago, I stumbled across a recipe for molasses chocolate chip cookies. They're delicious - they end up perfectly chewy, almost caramel-tasting, and I love the salt sprinkled on top. Recipe here: http://joythebaker.com/2010/08/chewy-molasses-chocolate-chip-cookies/

My favorite is called Cookie Monster cookies. Kind of a glorified oatmeal cookie with M&Ms, choc chips, and soft and chewy.

Rootbeer cookies are my latest favorite. A friend from the campground made some and gave me her recipe. They're really soft and taste awesome!

We use a sugar cookie recipe of my mom's and use fun cookie cutters for my little guy to help decorate!

I love pecan tassies. I learned to make them with my Grammy years ago. It has a crust made with cream cheese, which makes them light and airy and a simple pecan pie like filling. YUM!

My new favorite is a pumpkin spice ginger cookie. My sister has developed an egg allergy and this recipe works great with an egg replacer. And if you like them as spicy as we do, just bump up the quantites on the spices. They have become a favorite in the family and here in town for events. https://fountainavenuekitchen.com/pumpkin-ginger-cookies/

I make gluten free chocolate chip cookies. I substituted Bob's Red Mill 1 for 1 and my husband says it is better than my original classic recipe

For me, it's cranberry cookies with browned butter frosting. Mmmm!A little work, but so worth it!

We have a tradition of homemade fudge. My grandma use to make it. And while I don't use her recipe since discovering a Nutella fudge recipe, it still reminds me of her each Christmas.

I grew up in Danish/Swedish household. My Aunt always made Danish Kleiner for Christmas. Dunking them in her homemade hot cocoa is one of my fondest memories of childhood. Christmas always means the scents of pine trees, cardamom, and fireplaces:-)

The cookies I love the most are peanut butter. I have used a few different recipes. The more peanut butter the better.
