On the 10th Day of Sock Yarn, Simply Sock Yarn gave to me...
a ball of Opal's new 6-Ply Romance collection!
To have a chance to win this thick and warm self-patterning sock yarn, simply answer the following question in the comments below:
Tell me about one of your holiday traditions. For example, what you might eat every Christmas morning, or a parictular concert you attend each year, or a perhaps a particular song you play at a specific time.
One of our Christmas morning traditions is that we have the same special breakfast each year: cinnamon rolls, fruit and bacon. We open stockings and gifts first and then have that same breakfast each year. We started having this particular menu before we had kids even, so it's been nearly a decade of the same tasty meal. It's something that even picky James will eat.
I made these cinnamon rolls the past two years, but before that I believe they all came from a can. It makes quite a lot, so like the author suggests, you could deliver them to friends. Or freeze them at any stage. YUM. You can also make them with chocolate chips, with a cream cheese/orange peel frosting, or a slew of other combos. Just do it.

Egg and sausage casserole Christmas morning. Rib roast and Yorkshire pudding for dinner. Christmas Eve - Tom Jone's shrimp from a Virginia Beach cookbook. And, yes, we often open a gift christmas Eve.

I always make a big brunch (vegan of course)in the late morning and then have lots of appetizers and snacks throughout the day. We just like to pull things out of the fridge and heat them up as we get "peckish", while watching movies and the Lakers play basketball!

We try to get together as a family and have special meal Christmas eve; Christmas day is spent with extended family. Usually on CHristmas EVe we either watch some good Christmas movies or play card games for the evening.

Our favorite Christmas tradition, is the Christmas morning brunch of Oven Souffle. It bakes while we open gifts and such and then we eat! We could not have Christmas morning without it!

Along with decorating the tree and making cookies (fairly expected), we have corned beef, cabbage and boiled potatoes on Christmas because...well. I'm not sure but everyone likes it!

Growing up, we had Christmas Dinner and went to midnight mass on Christmas Eve and brunch on Christmas Day. Now with my own family, we are just starting to create new traditions with our 4 year old.

Our Christmas tradition is to (hopefully) have everyone here together. It doesn't happen often enough, so I treasure the experience when it does!

We have a birthday cake for Jesus on Christmas Eve - it's His birthday :-)

Every year my daughter gets to open one gift on Christmas Eve, and it is always a new pair of pj's washed and ready to wear to bed that night.

We open stockings Christmas eve.

One of my favorite traditions, is Christmas Eve dinner where we prepare seven fish/seafood dishes. It's been my families tradition since I was a little girl (50+ years ago). It's paced leisurely throughout the late afternoon into the evening.Lots of laughs, stories and special memories.

Traditions are changing in our family as children move out and have their own lives. However, they will always have a Christmas stocking at my house, and somewhere in there will be a Lifesaver story book.

I always make cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning. I don't have your patience though - we open all the presents before we eat. :)

Why did anyone remind me of cinnamon rolls? One of my favorite foods, especially with maple icing. I make biscuits and gravy for any special breakfast--or a breakfast pizza or German Pancakes. Sometimes I make an egg gravy like my mother used to serve (we raised laying hens and sold eggs!). We don't really have a particular Christmas Eve or Christmas Day dinner menu, but this year I'm making corned beef for Christmas Eve. And I might have to add cinnamon rolls to our breakfast. Ah, me. What reading blogs does to one's diet isn't worth worrying about at Christmas time, right?

Christmas Eve dinner is always --- pizza delivery!! 3 years ago we moved to a small town & they don't deliver out to our "mountain" so now we have to drive the 15minutes in to town & pick it up.

Sadly we have no tradition as all our children are grown and have families of their own. Half are out of town and half in town. I cook dinner for my husband and I, we watch tv and wait for the grandkids to come by to give and receive gifts. Although, at this point in our lives, our Christmases are pretty quiet, it is our time to reflect on the true reason for the season and how truly blessed we our. I guess maybe we have established a different Christmas tradition!

Christmas dinner is Steak/Shrimp and Crab legs with cheddar biscuits and cheesecake for desert.
At some point in the week, we make "Monster Cinnamon Rolls'" from a book by Diane Mott Davidson.

Growing up on a farm, we had chores to complete before or after the candlelight service. We got to open on present that night before dinner which was always clam chowder and freshly made bread. Breakfast was nothing special Christmas morning (cows still had to be milked before we got to open presents) but there was always leftover clam chowder with bread to eat whenever you needed something good.
The chowder is still a tradition even though I've been off the farm for many years.

My parents have a giant brunch. 6 different quiches & turkey & ham & mustard sauce! I can't wait!

My family always gathers at my parent's house. Before opening gifts we read the Christmas story from Luke 2 and sing Christmas carols. Then we open gifts, have a huge meal, and just enjoy each other. And try to keep the kiddies from tearing the house down.

The C Clan tradition does a gift exchange for large item for each person. Then we all get a chance to find $5 gifts for each person's stocking. Fun to find gifts for small price tag. Of course my Dad ignores the price limit...his patriarch "duty". :-).

We always wait until after the 12th to decorate. That started when my brother was born on the 12th. We waited until after we celebrated his birthday to put up the tree.

We live in the mountains so we go out and cut our tree the day after Thanksgiving. When we get home everyone is cold, tired, but happy. We hang all our wet mittens, socks, scarves, hats (all knit by me!) next to the wood burner, change into dry clothes then while the kids start decorating the tree I make hot cocoa and decorated sugar cookies to hang on the tree although honestly very few make it to the tree!

Since I'm Jewish we celebrate Channukah with potato pancakes or donuts, and we light the candles.

One of our Christmas traditions is to read the Nativity story in the morning before opening presents. One of our "Christmas foods" is homemade muesli.
Posted by: Chelsea W | December 22, 2012 at 10:04 PM
We get up extra early to open all the presents, take a nap then make homemade pizza. The rest of the day is filled with playing with our gifts, some exchanging (it happens often where gifts are traded), then lots of snacking.

After reading your cinnamon rolls recipe my holiday meal seems boring in comparison. We always have ham and scallop potatoes on Christmas. Merry Christmas to all!
Posted by: Barbara | December 22, 2012 at 10:52 PM
We have cinnamon rolls too! Usually from a cam tough. We watch Christmas Vacation on Christmas Eve, then the kids usually talk us into opening gifts early.

The tradition is to make and distibute fruit cakes to my fruit cake loving family. It has been going on for many years.

A fairly new one for me is a Christmas Eve pot luck at a friend's house.

Every Christmas Eve we have roast beef and yorkshire pudding - yummmmmmm.

We have started. New tradition since my son has separated from my two granddaughters" mother. We are celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve. We at least get to spend time with the girls and let them open gifts. Santa comes early to Mina's house!

We play Christmas cds while we open presents. Faves are Kenny G and Bing Crosby.

Okay, I'm going to respond with three of my favorite traditions. We made up each of them for ourselves and they are truly small and simple pleasures.
First, for many years our tradition was for my husband to give me a gift certificate to Portland's own Powell's Books and then for us to make a field trip there (open 365 days a year) to magically change the certificate into actual books! We don't do it every year anymore but still pretty often.
Second, on the Sunday before Christmas, usually returning from a friend's open house, I count the homes decorated with Christmas lights as we drive north for half a mile on N.E. 21st Ave. There were once only a couple dozen and last year there were 66! It's lovely to notice.
My third and newest tradition (5 years?) is to go for a holiday mocha at Dutch Brothers and give the servers twelve (one for each "day" of Christmas) completed Frequent Buyer cards for them to give away to customers they choose. One free drink per car, the customer must say "Merry Christmas, Linda!" and are encouraged to either pay it forward or donate equivalent amounts to the tip jar. I never use my cards for myself, just save them for Christmas and my birthday (in May). It's an easy and inexpensive way to spread fun.

Our Christmas Eve tradition has shifted over the years. We no longer go to midnight mass. Now we go to 4pm mass and then out to Chinese food for dinner. Not very Christmassy but it works for us.
