Opal Harry Potter Sock Yarn Update
I have some news from the US Opal distributor. Seems that the German factory was flooded awhile back due to terrible storms in the low-lying area. This destoyed some of the much-coveted Harry Potter yarn, and obviously caused a bit of a hold up in production. This means that not only will yarn stores be getting smaller amounts in the inital run, but also that it won't arrive until early fall. The msrp is $22.95 a ball.
Per Warner Brothers, not a skein of the yarn can leave the Opal factory until September 15, 2008. Thus, it will be approximately 2 weeks after that before US stores will get it in stock- barring any kind of hold ups in Customs, of course. Simply Socks Yarn Company is second on the list of stores, and we ship very quickly as you know, so you'll get it asap. I've ordered quite a bit to meet as many needs as possible. But again, this amount is significantly decreased b/c of the flood.
So I will be able to offer the yarn in early October, and will be able to get some from the second run in November. For those of you who are foaming at the mouth for the Harry Potter yarn (I'm one of you!), please keep updated here at the blog, and I'll have another update in a couple weeks. I'll have news about preorders and special pricing then.
If you have yet to see the pictures of the Harry Potter sock yarn, check out the slideshow of all 8 colorways here.
Edited to add: Want to pre- order the yarn? Learn more here.
No colorway for Hermione? Outrageous!

I was just about to say the same thing!
At least they got Tonks right -- her hair was all wrong in the movie.

How COULD they omit Hermione? Herf!

I've read some knitters idea that perhaps the reason they omitted her is b/c they have to save some of the characters should they do a second round of Opal Harry Potter sock yarn for another movie. It's a good theory, but I've heard nothing from Opal that backs that up.
I agree- I'd like to see a Hermione colorway too!

Oh no! September seems so unbearably far away now! Originally I wondered about the lack of a Hermione colorway, but it makes sense really. Other characters are much more strongly associated with specific colors (Harry has his green eyes, Ron has his Weasley red hair and love of Chudley Cannons Orange, Tonks has her color-change hair, Malfoy has his Slytherin affinity for green and that white blond hair) Hermione would be a difficult colorway to come up with I think.

How about a colorway for Hagrid? He is a colorful charater. Love the Tonks colorway.

Is there a presale???!!! Where?? Here??OOOOh I love the Tonks, too. Also Hedwig, Ron and Dumbledore. I am not as keen on Harry as the others.

I also think it outrageous to omit Hermione, but where's the Half-Blood Prince??
